Still The Water impressed me with its gentle drama, its poetry and the emotions it conveys through almost silent scenes, in which the gaze and presence of the characters are the main source of attention. Naomi Kawase makes us live in the moment. We reflect at the same time as the characters, and face, as they do, the devastating reality of nature, time and the brutality of this world.
The credits are built around the cycle of life and death, as well as the divine and supernatural forms of life in which the characters in Still The Water deeply believe. The theme of nature recurs in every scene, and physical icons of the film are present, such as the bicycle and the Japanese street.
